Tarakany, ‘The happiest man in the world’

If a punk band Tarakany doesn’t ring any bells here’s a good chance to get started. The band’s name translates as Cockroaches. I’ve heard a track of theirs on Nashe Radio (the only radio station in Russia dedicated entirely to the local rock music). That track is “The happiest man on the Earth“. Despite being simplistic and patronizing it is also cool and positive. Although it might sound offensive, it’s hard to argue with the major idea that a person should never be alone.

A rough translation of the lyrics follows:

The Happiest Man on the Earth (Tarakany)

In poverty and depression
Or any major trouble
You’ll find the ones on the edge,
Whose life is even worse than yours.
When your life becomes hell
And the Sun stops shining,
Be aware that there’s nobody happier than you
On the best of the planets.

Chorus.

As long as you have arms, legs, the head on your shoulders,
As long as you are good for something, abandon the self-pity!
You are young and free, which means you have everything!
As long as you are good for something, pity anyone else!

For example, recall John Coffey from the “Green Mile”.
Did you? Right, he was fried there.
So whenever you suffer think about that movie.
Unlike you scumbag, John is the one we do sympathize with.

You keep complaining about not fulfilling something,
But could you cure Tom Hanks’ balls?
Yet John Coffee has accomplished that, but nobody cared
And that did not save John Coffee.

There’s no fairness, bro — c’est la vie!
Wipe your nose, don’t hold it against me,
In this world there’s a shortage of powerful people,
Try to manage yourself, don’t spend your power on self-pity.
Don’t spend your power on self-pity!

As long as you have arms, legs, the head on your shoulders,
As long as you are good for something, abandon the self-pity!
You are young and free, which means you have everything!
As long as you are good for something, pity anyone else!

So, when you feel bad, there are always those worse off
They have problems with drugs, firearms, legality,
And you safe at home, weeping that nobody needs you,
Get outside, bitch, and look what it’s like there!

A six-years-old Pasha cannot get his brew,
He sits in the basement and inhales glue,
His mommy gives him mere scolds,
Because she is sixteen years old.

Take a detached look at yourself and others;
How many times do we pronounce the word “I” daily?
While being suffocated by tiny failures and ridiculous problems,
Keep in mind there’s nobody happier than you across the entire Earth!

Chorus.

Chorus.

For anyone else…
For anyone else…
